THE MIKE SYNAR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The Center for the Study of Representation at the Institute of Governmental Studies is pleased to announce the Mike Synar Research Fellowship, made possible by a generous donation from Bill Brandt, a member of the Board of Advisers of the Institute of Governmental Studies.

This fellowship honors Mike Synar, the former U.S. Congressman from the 2nd District of Oklahoma from 1979 to 1995. As a member of Congress, Synar was praised for his independent and critical voice and for his dedication to public service. He was first elected to Congress at the age of 28 and sadly passed away when only 45. As a member of Congress, Synar was praised for his independent and critical voice and for his dedication to the public interest. Synar Research Fellowships are awarded to distinguished UC Berkeley graduate students who are writing their dissertations on an aspect of American politics, including public opinion, electoral behavior, civic participation, government institutions, social movements, and public policy. Each year, the Center for the Study of Representation will award up to five Synar Research Fellowships of up to $3,000 each. The Center for the Study of Representation encourages applicants from a broad range of disciplines (Political Science, History, Economics, Sociology, Law, Public Policy, Journalism, and other disciplines) to apply.

Eligibility

To be eligible, graduate students must have advanced to candidacy. The research project must be on an aspect of American politics. Students who are conducting comparative research across nations with the United States as a major case are eligible to apply.

Application and Procedures

Applications must be submitted by noon on Monday, December 3, 2007 to Terri Bimes, Director of the Center for the Study of Representation. Awards will be announced by Tuesday, January 22, 2008.

THE NELSON W. POLSBY GRANT FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS RESEARCH

The Center for the Study of Representation at the Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) is pleased to announce the Nelson W. Polsby Grant for Public Affairs Research, made possible by a generous donation from Bill Brandt, a member of the Board of Advisers of the Institute of Governmental Studies.

This grant honors Nelson W. Polsby, who was a great source of inspiration for young scholars. Polsby served as the director of IGS from 1989 to 1999 and was an esteemed faculty member of the UC Berkeley Department of Political Science for 40 years. In 1995, he was awarded an endowed chair, the Heller Professor of Political Science.

The Center for the Study of Representation will award up to ten research grants of up to $500 each to UC Berkeley undergraduate students who have participated or are participating in one of the following: 1) the UC Berkeley Washington Program, 2) the Cal in Sacramento Program, 3) a senior honor thesis class, 4) the McNair Scholars Program, 5) the Miller Scholars Program, or 6) the Haas Scholars Program.

The purpose of the grant is to encourage undergraduate students to conduct major research on an aspect of American politics, including public opinion, electoral behavior, civic participation, government institutions, social movements, and public policy. The grant may be used to cover research expenses such as traveling to Washington, DC to interview lawmakers, buying a dataset, or covering photocopying costs at an archive.
