Choosing the President in 2008: The Evolving Process and Its Effects

Co-sponsored with the School of Law

Topics considered will include the campaign finance system, "front-loading" the schedule of primaries and caucuses, analysis of this year's nomination contests, and an evaluation of presidential elections generally, including discussion of potential reforms.

The conference will be held in conjunction with the 27th annual IGS Presidential Symposium, which features journalists and scholars discussing the performance of the president during the previous year and the likely prospects for the administration during the coming year. This event, held in the evening, is a campus tradition and draws a large crowd.

The American Presidency at War

Note: MCLE credits are available for attending this event.

This conference will explore how the powers of the presidency fluctuate in times of war and peace. Is the wartime presidency more powerful than the domestic politics presidency? Does the Constitution sanction this discrepancy? Have Congress, the Courts, and public opinion supported the expansion of presidential power in wartime? This conference seeks to examine these questions in an expansive way incorporating a number of different subfields in political science as well as constitutional law and history. Although the focus of this conference is not on President George W. Bush and the Iraq War, examining the exercise of presidential power in war and peace historically will shed light on the current political situation and potential trends in the separation of powers.
