Fred J. Martin, Jr. is the quintessential friend of IGS. Over the past 20 years, he has been an active and productive visiting scholar, dedicated benefactor, and leading figure on the IGS National Advisory Council.
Before his retirement in 1993, Mr. Martin served as senior vice president and director of governmental relations at Bank of America. Prior to that, Mr. Martin served as vice president and Washington representative for the bank and vice president for public affairs. Mr. Martin helped shape bank policy on legislative and regulatory issues affecting worldwide operations. Before joining Bank of America in 1971, Mr. Martin worked with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, the San Francisco Examiner, the Denver Post, and the Associated Press.
Mr. Martin has always been active in California civic and public affairs. During his career, he managed political campaigns, served on numerous governmental advisory bodies, and boards of directors of the Public Affairs Council, the California Institute for Federal Policy Research, and the Citizens' Research Foundation (CRF). Mr. Martin was instrumental in bringing the CRF to Berkeley in 1999.
Mr. Martin is an active patron of IGS with a special interest in the Institute's Visiting Scholars Fund. This fund brings to IGS foreign and domestic scholars who study American institutions, politics, and public policy. Mr. Martin is an avid skier, backpacker, and runner with many marathons to his credit, including running the distance in support of IGS.
