An IGS Film: "The Voices of Tomorrow"

A short film was recently produced by John Crane Films to showcase what the Institute of Governmental Studies does and who we are. Learn about IGS as a place that combines the practical work of politics with the theoretical dynamism that will shape tomorrow's generation of national and state leaders.

Riva Litman

Riva Litman, '08

As a freshman at Berkeley, Riva Litman joined IGS as the undergraduate assistant in the Institute of Governmental Studies' Center on Politics. She worked at the Institute her entire Cal career, serving as an assistant on a major research project and as the teaching assistant in the campaign management class taught through IGS. Between her junior and senior years, Riva worked as an intern in the White House Office of Speechwriting, and after graduating she accepted a position as a research assistant at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C.

 

Josh Fryday

Josh Fryday, '03

While an undergraduate at Cal, Josh Fryday was awarded the prestigious Travers Undergraduate Fellowship by IGS. The fellowship recognized his passion for public service, which was also on display when he served as an ASUC senator and president of the Cal Democrats. He also served as a teaching assistant for the campaign management class taught through IGS. After graduation, Josh joined the 2004 John Edwards for President campaign, serving as the National Youth and Volunteer Director. Later he worked as a political consultant and then managed a California Assembly campaign. When the 2008 political cycle rolled around, Josh went back to work for the Edwards presidential effort, this time as Northern California Finance Director, overseeing all the campaign activities in northern California and raising nearly $2 million. Now Josh is attending UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law and will receive his J.D. in 2009.

 

Manoj Mate

Manoj Mate, '97, M.A. '04, Ph.D. '08

Manoj Mate holds a Ph.D. from the Travers Department of Political Science at UC Berkeley, and is a Mellon-Sawyer predoctoral fellow at the Center for Law and Society, Boalt Hall School of Law. His research interests include comparative law, election law and voting rights, and South Asian politics. Prior to joining the political science program at UC Berkeley, Manoj graduated with a J.D. from Harvard Law School. His dissertation analyzes the development and expansion of judicial power in the post-Emergency Indian Supreme Court.
