David DeGroot has over 20 years experience in law and government. Mr. DeGroot's government experience came from his time at the Department of City Planning in New York City, where he worked in the Executive Office and as a community planner in Flushing, Queens. Through this experience he learned how local government and regulatory agencies operate and how their performance could be improved.
After attending Berkeley Law, Mr. DeGroot began his practice as a trial attorney at Pillsbury, Madison and Sutro, where he worked on securities and antitrust cases, mostly on behalf of large companies. He then opened his own legal practice, where he assisted individuals and small businesses with the many challenges of the court system.
In 2001, he joined Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton in San Francisco, where he is now Special Counsel. He practices commercial, regulatory, tax and intellectual property law, helping his clients navigate through litigation and regulation.
Mr. DeGroot is President of the San Francisco Chapter of the Federalist Society. He writes frequently on issues of legal ethics, judicial independence, and alternative dispute resolution.
Mr. DeGroot earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Economics from Yale in 1986. He obtained his law degree from Berkeley Law in 1993, where his work concentrated on administrative law. He lives in San Francisco with his wife, Mary Kane, and their two children.
