JAMES FANG

James Fang

James Fang was elected to the BART Board in November 1990 and was sworn into office on December 6, 1990. Director Fang represents the 8th BART District, which includes portions of San Francisco.

Mr. Fang was elected by his fellow directors to serve as President of the BART Board during the year 2004. He previously held the position of President in 1998 and Vice President in 1997 and 2003. He is currently Chairperson for the San Mateo County Policy Committee and the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project Policy Advisory Board. He serves as a member of the District's Security Advocacy Ad Hoc Committee and is a member of the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Board. He serves as a member of the San Francisco Transportation Authority Liaison, the Santa Clara County Policy Committee, and the Strategic Finance Advisory Committee.

Mr. Fang graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, and attended Hastings College of Law. A member of the California State Bar, Director Fang served as a law clerk in the U.S. Attorney's Office and, while in college, was an aide to the late Congressman Philip Burton.

Mr. Fang served as Director of Commerce and Trade in the Administration of former San Francisco Mayor Frank Jordan. He was a member of the Extended Opportunity Program Foundation of City College and the Soo Yuen Association Scholarship Committee, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Chinatown YMCA and the San Francisco Cork, Ireland, Sister City Committee.

Mr. Fang is the President of Asian Week, the largest circulation Asian-American publication in the United States. He is married and lives in San Francisco.
