IGS Salon Gala 2015 - Politics 2016: The Insiders’ View
As American voters face a wide open presidential election amid a changing political landscape, two of the country’s most distinguished strategists provide an insiders’ perspective on the 2016 campaign and the nature of American politics. Democrat David Axelrod and Republican Steve Schmidt have both served as top advisors in the White House and on the presidential campaign trail. Now they will bring their unique insights to IGS, where they will be joined by moderator Amy Walter, the national editor of the Cook Political Report, for a discussion sure to inform, enlighten, and entertain.
In addition, the Institute will honor two award recipients.
Robert J. Birgeneau, 9th Chancellor of the University of California Berkeley, will receive the Darius and Sarah Anderson Distinguished Service Award. An internationally distinguished physicist, Birgeneau is a leader in higher education and is well known for his commitment to diversity and equity in the academic community. He became the ninth chancellor on September 22, 2004, and served in this capacity for nearly nine years, successfully advancing a vision of “Access and Excellence” until stepping down at the end of May, 2013. Birgeneau remains on the UC Berkeley campus as a member of its faculty in the Departments of Physics and Materials Science and Engineering. Birgeneau is also the leader of the Lincoln Project.
Thuy Vu ('92) will receive the Bill and Patrice Brandt Alumni Leadership Award. Vu is a five-time Emmy award-winning journalist, anchor and program host who's covered everything from presidential debates to culinary creations. She hosts KQED Newsroom, a news analysis and interview program that takes audiences beyond the headlines and quick soundbites. She previously hosted LinkAsia, was a co-host of Eye on the Bay, and has been a news anchor and reporter for various Bay Area stations.
The annual IGS Salon Gala is presented by the Institute’s National Advisory Council, and celebrates members of the Berkeley community and the Institute’s continued status as an elite research center and home to programs that engage students in public service. Proceeds benefit this wide range of IGS activities.
This year’s event will feature a cocktail hour with heavy hors d'oeuvres, followed by the presentation of the IGS videos and awards and the discussion between Mr. Axelrod and Mr. Schmidt. Please see below for the full schedule.
