To celebrate the Center for Studies in Higher Education's (CSHE) 60th Anniversary, CSHE in partnership with University World News (link is external) will be hosting a two-day international conference on 16 and 17 November 2017 at the iconic UC Berkeley campus in Berkeley, California.

The conference will gather CSHE alumni and affiliated researchers, along with leading scholars and practitioners from throughout the world, focused on the theme 'Nationalism and Universities.'

Participants will explore the influence of nationalism, old and new versions, on major national universities in different regions of the globe.

Universities have been at the forefront of both national development and global integration. They undoubtedly will continue to play this dual role. But the political and policy world in which they operate is once again undergoing a transition, reflective of a significant change in domestic politics and international relations – a populist turn inwards among a key group of major nations.

The conference will address the following questions:

  • To what extent is nationalism, in its emerging form, a countervailing force to the international engagement of leading national universities?
  • With the rise of nationalism, how are leading national universities reshaping their roles in specific regions of the world? How are their activities and role in society being restricted?
  • Are there concepts, policies, alliances and influence that universities and their political allies might formulate to help promote the free flow of talent, collaborations, and ideas that characterize the best leading national flagship universities?

In addition, CSHE and the Student Experience in the Research University (SERU) Consortium invites you to attend a Fall Workshop on November 15 (link is external) that will feature recent data and analysis from the new gradSERU survey (link is external) and will serve as an introduction to the survey and the Consortium for interested research-intensive campuses.
