REI Colloquium: The New Noir: Spectrums of Space and Blackness in the 21st century with Orly Clergé
Event Contact: Professor Erin Kerrison: kerrison [at] berkeley.edu
Ongoing conversations about whether former President Barack Obama and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris are “really Black” and who is entitled to reparations for slavery have brought Black America’s cultural diversity to the center of national discourses in the past election cycles. The New Noir takes the reader into suburbia to unravel the complex Black politics happening within them in the post-Civil Rights era. The book challenges the neat assumptions about who lives in and shapes the suburbs and what it means to be Black in the 21st century. In this talk, Clerge discusses how New York’s diasporic Black middle-class groups are crafting their own definitions of race, mobility, and citizenship.
