The Fraying of Democracy in the West?
Please RSVP to wmello [at] berkeley.edu
In the aftermath of the election of President Trump, Brexit and the upsurge of "populism" in many European countries, questions about the fraying of democratic norms and institutions in established Western democracies are raised. These issues concern the integrity of elections, the undermining of media institutions, the splintering of party systems, the defense of individual rights, and the decline of public support for democratic norms. This distinguished panel will address the extent, causes, and consequences of these putative threats of the seemingly established consensus on democratic governance and a liberal international order.
