The goal of the Baxter Liberty Initiative at the University of California, Berkeley is to encourage dialogue on the ideal of freedom in political and economic life. The central place of the idea of liberty in the founding and development of the American nation and the tensions between liberty and other values are of enduring moral and political significance. There are sharp disagreements about the consequences of economic and political institutions where freedom and choice are the constitutive features, and the purpose of the Baxter Liberty Initiative is to engage the Berkeley campus with these ideas through the intellectual contributions of distinguished scholars whose own work has illuminated the role of liberty in specific phases of social life and public policy.
