Danny Murillo, Gardner Fellow 2015, Featured in the New Yorker
Danny Murillo ('15), a John Gardner Fellow in 2015, is featured in the December 12 New Yorker. "The Ex-Con Scholars of Berkeley," by Larissa MacFarquhar, recounts Murillo's transition from prison to UC Berkeley, and his work to support other formerly incarcerated students. While at Berkeley, Murillo founded a group for formerly incarcerated students called the Underground Scholars Initiative, or U.S.I. As a Gardner Fellow he counselled former inmates who were headed to college, and worked at the Vera Institute of Justice in New York. In 2016 he was selected as a Soros Justice Fellow and is working to empower formerly incarcerated students by creating a network of people throughout California who have successfully made the transition from incarceration to higher education.
