September 21, 2026

KQED reporter Tyche Hendricks covered a talk by University of Wisconsin historian Marla Ramirez at the IGS Race, Ethnicity, and Immigration Colloquium on September 17, 2026, where Ramirez drew parallels between President Trump's current immigration enforcement efforts and the little-known chapter of U.S. history known as Mexican Repatriation. Ramirez, whose new book "Banished Citizens: A History of the Mexican American Women Who Endured Repatriation" documents how an estimated 1 million people, the majority of them U.S. citizens, were sent to Mexico between World War I and World War II, argued that both eras share a pattern of racial profiling and disregard for civil and constitutional rights. IGS Co-Director G. Cristina Mora noted that the history also illuminates women's resilience in the face of unjust exclusionary practices. Click here to read the full article.
