Few experiences capture the tension of DC quite like a government shutdown. Witnessing firsthand the frustration and resilience of our representatives has come with both uncertainty and confusion. While it is deeply disheartening and disappointing to see programs halted, employees laid off, and political divisions deepen, this experience has reminded me why public service matters and how fragile, yet critical, our institutions are.
As a Legislative and Press Intern for Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-28), I’ve had the privilege of working with constituent services (writing letters, answering phone calls, assisting visitors), compiling press clips, drafting cosponsorship legislation and recommendations, attending briefings from a variety of issues, and preparing policy memos. It has truly been a surreal experience. As a constituent myself, I feel a great sense of pride and honor to be associated with this office and assist people from my own community. Although I am temporarily unable to be in the office to work due to the shutdown, I am still very grateful for the time I’ve had. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the incredible staff in my office and connecting with other interns on the Hill.
As a first-generation student, I never imagined being the first in my family to work in a government internship to experience firsthand how legislation is made and how people on the Hill collaborate. It’s also been surreal seeing representatives in person after watching them through a screen for so long. Still, even during the shutdown, I’ve found ways to stay connected with my co-interns, mentors, and the new city.
I’ve visited several Smithsonian Museums, explored Georgetown, went on morning/night walks around the National Mall, and even attended a few shutdown happy hours. I’ve also used running as a tool to explore most of the city and stay active. I have really enjoyed running by the Tidal Basin, Mount Vernon Trail, and Rock Creek. Additionally, it’s been great connecting with students from other UC campuses and getting to know fellow Cal students I hadn’t met before. Overall, I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity and excited for what’s to come.
