Politics & Policy

My amazing supervisors, Briana Mullen and Irene Garcia. Not only were they both Cal Alum but also previous fellows of the Cal-In-Sac program!

Accepting an internship position with the California Department of Education earlier this year, I anxiously looked forward to the summer state date, despite remaining not fully aware what my duties would consist of. Education remains a vital means to success in my life, it is something I prioritize as I know through attaining it, all things are possible. So getting a chance to spend six weeks working in the Superintendent of Public Instruction's office truly became a dream come true. Observing the under-workings of regulations, participating in meetings relating to the highest level of conversation regarding educational policies, and first hand experiencing the department's evolution are just a few of many highlights during my first few weeks. Participating in Leadership meetings geared toward celebrating the work the Department achieved in the past six years as well as acknowledging each Division Director and their team's efforts remain beneficial learning experiences as I was asked to be apart of the planning as well as the execution of the event. Furthermore, I conducted precedent-setting research which will be utilized by the Department to develop strategy and state-wide policy moving forward. On the other hand of my internship experience with the Initiatives office, I participated and gained experience in regards to staffing a politician! Working in an office directly supporting an elected official, I witnessed the extraordinary efforts of several individuals ensuring things run smoothly, orderly, and timely. The importance of the TEAM is rightfully valorized and I am thankful for the opportunity of joining CDE's. I will eternally cherish the memories made while interning with the California Department of Education and look forward to exercising the skills gained here in future endeavors.
