John R. Searle was born in 1932 in Denver, Colorado. He received his university education at the University of Wisconsin and at Oxford, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He received his degrees, B.A, M.A, and D.Phil., from Oxford. His first academic position was as Lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford. Since 1959, he has been a Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, where he is now Slusser Professor of Philosophy. He has been a Visiting Professor at a large number of universities in the United States, Europe, South America and China. He is the author of twenty books in philosophy and about 200 articles. His works are translated into over twenty languages worldwide. He has received a large number of awards and honorary degrees from a number of universities. Most of his work has been in the philosophy of language, the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of society.
