Over the past 11 weeks, my UCDC experience has been full of surprises. While I anticipated the usual challenges—like adjusting to a new environment, navigating travel logistics, and dealing with the distance from friends and family—I never expected to adapt so quickly or to find joy in this transition. Initially, I thought being away from my loved ones would be harder than it turned out to be, especially since I’m not usually a fan of change. However, this experience has surprisingly been exactly what I needed. It forced me out of my comfort zone, allowing me to learn how to handle change and to discover what I can accomplish independently. My internship and the new hobbies I’ve embraced have significantly eased this transition.
I’m currently interning at the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), an advocacy organization dedicated to supporting Latino workers and their families. Much of my work revolves around social media, where I create graphics and write captions to enhance our online presence. I also attend meetings and take notes to keep my supervisors informed. Given that we’re in an election season, our workload has increased, requiring some travel as well. One highlight was a trip we took to Philadelphia during my second week working there, where I had the chance to canvas in a predominantly Latino community. This was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had so far, because I was able to engage with residents about the importance of voting and see their gratitude for being recognized in a way they often aren’t.
Outside of work, I’ve been exploring DC through hiking and walking. Montrose Park has become my favorite hiking spot, with its trails connecting to Rock Creek, a river that runs through to DC. I’ve found hiking to be incredibly calming and a perfect way to unwind after a busy week. Additionally, wandering through DC has allowed me to soak in the city’s rich history and vibrant culture, making my time here even more fulfilling. There are so many beautiful places that you can see by just walking around DC, that it has become one of my favorite ways to pass the time.
