John Gardner Fellowship: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to have a specific organization lined up to apply for the Gardner Fellowship?

No, you don’t need to apply with a predetermined organization or mentor. However, strong candidates should demonstrate a clear interest in a specific issue area and be familiar with potential organizations that align with their goals. After selection, Fellows will work with program staff to find a placement and mentor.

Can I use the Gardner Fellowship to launch my own organization?

No. The Fellowship is designed to place fellows within established government or nonprofit organizations. It offers a mentored experience that provides high-level exposure and the chance to work with a leading organization and a distinguished leader in the fellow’s field.

Who should write my letters of recommendation?

Choose two recommenders who can speak to your strengths as a student and a public service leader. Select substance over prestige—for example, a lesser-known individual who knows you well is preferable to a well-known figure who does not. At least one letter must come from a UC Berkeley academic reference (professor, lecturer, or graduate student instructor).

How will I know if I’m selected for an interview?

You’ll receive details about interviews after submitting your online application. Interviews typically take place on campus 4-6 weeks after the submission deadline.

What is the interview like?

The interview lasts about 20 minutes. You’ll be asked about your interest in and readiness for the Fellowship. The selection committee includes faculty, staff, and alumni.

Do I need to be a U.S. citizen to apply?

No. You must be legally able to work in the U.S. at the time of your placement, but U.S. citizenship is not required.

Do I need to be available during the spring semester?

Yes. Fellows are expected to have regular check-ins with the Gardner program director throughout the spring, though there is some scheduling flexibility.

Can I accept other fellowships?

No. The Gardner Fellowship is a full-time, 10-month commitment. You may not accept other fellowships that overlap with it, and the Gardner Fellowship cannot be deferred.
