Cristina Mora and Tianna Paschel on their new book, Normalizing Inequality: How Californians Make Sense of the Growing Divide. The piece draws on interviews with both authors about how their California upbringings shaped their research, the three coping strategies Californians use when confronting economic disparity, and how the mythology of the California dream can dampen political action. Mora and Paschel argue that despite surveying and interviewing thousands of residents from a diverse, precariously middle-class group, they found that Californians largely understand inequality around them but are nonetheless not moved to challenge it.
