Fatima Martinez Jara is currently a junior studying Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. She immigrated to the United States at the age of 5 and grew up in a low-income immigrant community. As a result, she experienced firsthand the injustices immigrants of color encountered, which made her interested in the legal and policy-making fields. She became her community’s translator at a young age, enabling her to find her passion for public service. However, due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fatima had to help her parents provide for her family. She worked for both of her parents' businesses, her first two years of college, and went to school full time at Las Positas Community College. This past summer, she worked for the City of Newman in their recreational department, where she provided healthy outlets for the younger community. This summer, she plans to intersect her interest in law and passion for public service by interning as a Matsui Center Local Government Fellow with the local government.
