Karla Katherine Vicencio Ramirez (she/her)

Hi, I’m Karla Vicencio-Ramirez. I'm a first generation, low-income, 3rd year at UC Berkeley. I am from San Bernardino, CA. I’m double majoring in Legal Studies and Sociology. I'm a part of many communities on campus, such as being an intern for the Chicanx/Latinx Student Development Center. I also am a co-facilitator of a support group on campus titled “MALCS” which stands for Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social. As a co-facilitator for MALCS I provide a safe environment for Latinx, Native American/Indigenous, Black and gender non conforming folks on campus to come together and build relationships and get away from the typical eurocentric male gaze. I also serve as a staff team member for a URAP research project led by Lupe Gallegos Diaz, director of the CLSD and Lillian Castillo-Speed, head of the Ethnic Studies Library. With my participation in this project, I am assisting in developing an oral history portal that will live at the Ethnic Studies Library to be shared with community members to listen to Chicanx/Latinx identifying alumni's stories of how they navigated Cal as an individual of color. I strongly value la comunidad and I hope that after my undergraduate career I may be able to further my educational career and pursue law school or a Sociology PhD program to pursue research after my time here at Cal. It is a career goal of mine to attend law school and upon graduation, work in either of the following areas of law: education, immigration, criminal or family law. I have a strong determination to pursue law because I hope to specifically assist Latinx and Black families in the legal system, making them feel understood, comfortable and seen throughout the legal process.
