Kulsoom Hasan

Job title:
Class of 2023
2023 Democracy Camp in DC
2023 Schaeffer Fellowship

Kulsoom Hasan is a fourth-year undergraduate student pursuing studies within the Travers Department of Political Science and the Goldman School of Public Policy. Her passion for public service was initially forged through community engagement at the local governmental level as a voter drive organizer and grassroots campaign canvasser. From there, her foray into legislative research and policy advocacy expanded as she further explored the interdisciplinary nature of politics and government through hands-on experience.

Her passion for comparative politics and government, labor and employment law, and disability rights advocacy is reflected in her prior experience lobbying elected officials as a Government Relations Associate for the Associated Students of the University of California Office of External Affairs. Her research projects have included mapping statewide labor rights violations amongst non-English speaking populations in collaboration with the California Domestic Workers Coalition and conducting comparative legislative research for a recent bill proposal for the California State Legislature by the United Food and Commercial Workers labor union. She also serves as a member of the Student Advisory Council for the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment’s Labor Center. As an undergraduate researcher at the Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law, she is Co-Director of Development, a member of the Disability Rights and Labor and Pay Equity working groups, and has presented legal research on international disability rights at the headquarters of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights in Warsaw, Poland.

As a Schaeffer Fellow and Democracy Camp in DC Fellow, Kulsoom hopes to contribute significantly toward the advancement of social equity through civic engagement and is highly honored by the opportunity to further her affinity for public service through the Matsui Center.
