2022 Matsui Lecture: The Future of Democracy, A Conversation with Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen

Tuesday, March 8, 2022 4:00pm - 5:15pm

The Robert T. Matsui Center for Politics and Public Service is pleased to announce that Former United States Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen will be the 2022 Matsui Lecturer.

The Matsui Lecture is delivered each year by a distinguished former Member of Congress. In addition to speaking at a large public event, the Lecturer also speaks to classes, meets with students, and participates in the intellectual life of the Matsui Center and the Cal campus. Following a pandemic-related hiatus, we are thrilled to restart the Matsui Lecture series this spring and carry on the tradition of bipartisan engagement on campus.

About the Speaker:

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen was elected to represent Florida's 27th congressional district in 1989, becoming the first Cuban American and Latina elected to Congress. She served as chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee from 2011 to 2013. A leading Republican moderate, Ros-Lehtinen was ranked the most bipartisan House Republican during the 115th United States Congress, according to The Lugar Center and the McCourt School of Public Policy's Bipartisan Index. She chose not to seek re-election in 2018 and left office in 2019.

About the Moderator:

Maria Echaveste is the President of the Opportunity Institute, a non-profit focused on increasing social and economic mobility and advancing racial equity. Before that, she built a distinguished career working as a consultant, lecturer, senior White House official, long-time community leader, and corporate attorney. Echaveste also has been a Senior Fellow at UC Berkeley’s Center for Latin American Studies 2008-2021, and affiliated with the UC Berkeley Food Institute since 2013. Echaveste serves on the board of directors of UCSF-Benioff Oakland Children’s Hospital; Cadiz, Inc.
