Applications for the 2024 Schaeffer Fellowship program are now closed

The Matsui Center is pleased to partner with the Leonard D. Schaeffer Fellows in Government Service program to support undergraduate students pursuing careers in government. Schaeffer Fellows complete 10-week, high-level summer internships at the local, state, and federal levels in order to develop an informed view of government service and operations.

Program Overview

  • Schaeffer Fellows independently apply for and secure a 10-week full-time government summer internship working with elected officials or government agencies at the local, state, or federal level.

  • During the summer, Fellows are paired with an alumni mentor, engage with professional development resources, and attend a professional conference in Washington, DC.

  • Fellows receive a $5,500 stipend to help with temporary relocation and living expenses.

Eligibility

  • Open to registered UC Berkeley students with sophomore or junior standing (including transfer students). Seniors with at least one semester of full-time undergraduate coursework remaining after completing their internship are also eligible.

  • Students from all academic fields are encouraged to apply.

  • While prior public service internship experience is not a requirement, competitive candidates will be able to demonstrate transferable skills and a strong interest in public service.

  • Must be able to independently secure a government internship by April 2024 and work 30-40 hours/week for 10 weeks during Summer 2024.

Is this program right for me?

  • The Schaeffer Fellowship supports students who are interested in pursuing a career in government at any level (local, state, or federal).

  • Fellows must independently secure a government internship placement (no later than April 2024).

  • Successful Schaeffer applicants are able to demonstrate a commitment to public service, a high level of professionalism and proactivity, and a well thought out plan for securing an internship placement. While prior public service internship experience is not required, competitive candidates will be able to demonstrate transferable skills and a strong interest in public service.
