My name is Jasmine Bloomberg, a transfer student from Santa Rosa Junior College. Being raised in a low-income family as a first-generation college student, education was always understood as an obstacle in the road of my life, rather than a tool that I could utilize to my advantage to better understand the world and people around me. At my community college, I developed self agency and became interested in education and how we counsel students. I’m deeply passionate about student agency and voice, and am currently studying the contemporary issues and history surrounding students and how they’re depicted in the education space here at Cal.
As an American Studies major with a concentration in student advocacy and representation, I will be a part of the positive change in the educational system, creating a space in which every student’s voice can be heard, respected and taken into consideration when deciding how to move forward with the way in which we partake in our pedagogical practices as teachers and counselors. I want to be a part of the encouragement and push for students to find their agency within themselves, take their education into their own hands and make informed, critically thought-out decisions in regards to their future careers. Every human deserves to obtain an education, and I want to be a part of the conversation surrounding the funding and policy-making regarding local k-12 grades here in the Bay Area.
