As American democracy confronts threats on multiple fronts, how are women leaders charting the path forward? Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has been at the forefront of struggles on issues of voting rights, election reform, health care, climate, and immigration, navigating landmark legislative proposals through the House of Representatives. As the first woman Speaker of the House and House Democrats' leader for two decades, Speaker Pelosi brings an unparalleled perspective to contemporary American politics and policy.

Senator Boxer served with Speaker Pelosi in the House before making history in 1992 when she and Senator Feinstein became the first two women to be elected to the Senate representing a single state.

The Boxer Lecture is an annual event, sponsored jointly by the Institute of Governmental Studies and the Bancroft Library, that focuses on women in leadership.

About the Speakers

Nancy Pelosi is the 52nd Speaker of the House of Representatives, having made history in 2007 when she was elected the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. Now in her third term as Speaker, Pelosi made history again in January 2019 when she regained her position second-in-line to the presidency, the first person to do so in more than 60 years. As Speaker, Pelosi is fighting For The People, working to lower health care costs, increase workers’ pay through strong economic growth and rebuilding America, and clean up corruption for make Washington work for all. Read more

Barbara Boxer has been a forceful advocate for families, children, consumers the environment and her state of California until the day she left the United States Senate in January 2017. Boxer served 24 years in the Senate, 10 years in the House, and 6 years on the Marin County Board of Supervisors. A national leader on environmental protection, Senator Boxer worked to secure more than 1 million acres of wilderness to protect California’s natural heritage. Read more
