In 2011, Karen Skelton founded Skelton Strategies, a national political and cultural strategy firm based in California. Skelton is an award-winning political strategist, lawyer and author who brings a tenacious, fast-paced, focused campaign approach to problem solving big issues and opportunities. Skelton has managed some of the most complex and entrepreneurial projects in the nation for Presidents, Vice Presidents, Governors, CEOs, Foundations, moms and families. For seven years, she was the Co-Executive Producer of Maria Shriver’s The Women’s Conference and CEO and managing editor of the groundbreaking Shriver Reports. Skelton currently works in partnership with Maria Shriver on a variety of initiatives affecting women and with a few other smart and savvy individuals and companies on clean energy, food resource and investments in innovation.
Skelton served for a decade as the Managing Partner of the California practice of a national public affairs firm, the Dewey Square Group, growing its business from the ground up and helping to sell it in 2010. Before that, Skelton worked as a prosecutor at the United State Department of Justice, a political advisor in the Clinton White House, and a staffer on five Presidential campaigns. A long time ago, Karen danced with the Sacramento Ballet and on summer scholarship with the San Francisco Ballet. More recently, Skelton is a regular political commentator on Current TV and sits on the Board of the University of California Institute of Governmental Studies and The Anthony M. Kennedy Library Foundation. She lives in Sacramento with her husband, two daughters, and black lab.
